Proses Kerja Hard Disk



Platter
-Bahagian untuk menyimpan data.Bahagian ini berbentuk piringan yang dilapis bersama bahan magnetik dan berupaya menyimpan data.

Read/Write Head
-Berfungsi membaca & menulis data dari piring hardisk.Head ini terapat pada setiap bahagian atas & bawah platter

Acces Arm
-Merupakan sebuah pemegang kepada head.berfungsi mengerakkan head ke seluruh permukaan hardisk.

Electronic Board
-Dibahagi kepada dua(2) bahagian iaitu sebagai alat untuk kontrol motor dan kontrol kerja head.(Head controller)

Cylinder
-Berfungsi mencengkam platter agar bergerak pada paras motor & lubang pemutar platter

Magnet
-Terdiri daripada magnet asal magnet buatan yang berfungsi untuk mengatur gerakan pada head semasa berfungsi.

Speedy 8Gbit, 16Gbit SATA Express systems coming this year


The Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) Thursday announced that the ratification process has started for SATA Express, which standardizes PCI Express (PCIe) as an interface for client storage.

The specification is now under review by SATA-IO members. It’s expected to be available for review by the general public later this year.

The specification will define new device and motherboard connectors that support both new SATA Express and current SATA devices.

The SATA Express starndard utilizes a new connector defined by SATA-IO to enable a device with a PCIe interface to be in a hard disk drive form-factor. “So while such a PCIe device operates with PCIe protocol and signaling, the host would need a SATA Express host connector to connect to the PCIe device,” said Paul Wassenberg, SATA-IO Marketing Workgroup Chair.

Additionally, the SATA-IO specs define a SATA Express host as able to support either PCIe or SATA devices (drives), Wassenberg added.

SATA Express enables a client storage ecosystem that can include both SATA and PCIe protocols.

PCIe technology enables interface speeds of up to 1GB/s per client lane, versus today’s SATA technology speeds of up to 0.6GB/s.

The SATA Express specification will enable development of new devices that can utilize the PCIe interface and maintain compatibility with existing SATA applications. The technology, SATA-IO claims, will provide a cost-effective means to increase device interface speeds to 8Gb/s and 16Gb/s.

The new spec will be particularly useful in opening up bandwidth for new solid-state and hybrid drives, which are already pushing up against the limits of current SATA interfaces with I/O, SATA-IO said.

“This industry-wide effort has made a new level of performance available to client applications and enables connectivity to SATA Express enterprise hosts via the SFF-8639 multifunction connector,” said SATA-IO president Mladen Luksic, in a statement.

Bad Sector



What is Bad Sector

Every hard drive is separated into blocks or sectors. The size of one block is typically 512K. When the OS cannot read information from a block it is marked as a “bad” and is no longer used. In short, bad sectors are little clusters of data on your hard disk that cannot be read. Bad sector can cause a real damage to you hard drive by stressing your read arm


What Cause HDD Bad Sectors

  1. Improper shutdown of Windows;
  2. Defects of the hard disk, including general surface wear, pollution of the air inside the unit, or the head touching the surface of the disk;
  3. Other poor quality or aging hardware, including a bad processor fan, dodgy data cables, an overheated hard drive;
  4. Malware.


Types of Bad Sector

  1. Hard Bad Sector-are the ones that are physically damage i.e: you hard disk are expose to extreme heat or simply has a faulty mechanical part.
  2. Soft Bad Sector-also known as 'hard drive formatting wearing out', they are logical errors.


Check your HDD for errors
You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

  1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
  2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now.   If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  4. To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.
  5. To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.
  6. To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
  7. Click Start.

Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

Note:
If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

Data Wiping



Don't confused data wiping with 'delete or format data', delete and format your hard disk is simply marks file space as available for reuse, data wiping overwrites all data space on a storage device, replacing useful data with garbage data. Depending upon the method used, the overwrite data could be zeros (also known as “zero-fill”) or could be various random patterns.

Products that can be used for wiping hard disks might not be suitable for wiping other types of drives. In this article, we will look at methods for securely wiping hard disks, USB flash memory devices, flash memory cards, and SSDs

the steps:

  1. Determine the brand and model of hard disk you want to overwrite.
  2. Download a CD ISO image or a floppy disk image (depending upon your equipment) and use the image to create bootable media. The floppy disk image is self-contained: run it, insert a blank floppy disk when prompted, and the image is created on the disk. You will need to use a CD burning program that works with ISO images to convert the ISO image into a bootable CD.
  3. Restart your computer with the bootable media you created in Step 2.
  4. Select the hard disk to zero-fill when prompted.
  5. Choose the option to zero-fill the hard disk.
  6. When the program is finished, follow the on-screen instructions to shut down or restart your computer.
  7. Remove the wiped hard disk; you can now reuse or recycle the hard disk.
